SHARED SPACES
Front Portico
The two-story front portico, with redwood columns shipped by rail in the 1930s from the West Coast, shields the entrance from rain and offers a friendly place where the owners used to greet guests or sit and enjoy the traffic going by in rocking chairs.
Foyer, Main Hall and Stairway
The first impression on entering is the staircase and curved railing, reportedly curved in the local creek by the original owners. The medallion highlights the entry chandelier while a second chandelier hangs from the second floor ceiling. Farther back, the arched ceiling of the main hall repeats the theme and highlights the craftsmanship of the original builders.
Screened Porch
The screened porch is a great place to enjoy the outdoors and a favorite place to sit and enjoy nature when it is raining. The screens shelter guests from any unwanted flying insects while still giving an uninterrupted view of the abundant trees and vegetation all around the house. The screened porch has entrances from both the kitchen and the Truman Great Room.
Kitchen/Dining Room
This space has been transformed the most, by knocking out the wall between what was once a formal dining room separated by a swinging door from a tiny kitchen where the maid prepared meals. This newly renovated area now has a spacious open floor plan and island where guests can all be together while some prepare food and others play games, or talk. The large windows at the front and the large bay window provide light and a view of nature. A door in the kitchen area provides convenient access to the outside screened porch, brick patio, and outside barbeque grill.
Truman Great Room
This space is the oldest part of the house and dates back to the 1830s. What was then a two-room house later became this much bigger house in an addition in the 1930s. The Truman Great Room has a stone fireplace at each end, solid walnut woodwork in some of the doors and trim, and a high ceiling. It has been transformed into two conversation areas, one with a large flat screen television. It is a great place to relax after the game, graduation ceremony, or other event that brought you to town. This room has access to both the screened porch and the back brick patio.
